Let’s talk about the best PS5 remasters. No seriously, stay with me.
Rupert Giles once said to Buffy the Vampire Slayer that ‘in every generation, there is a Chosen One.’ Well, the games industry has something similar: in every console generation, there will be ports of old games you’ve already bought. Not as exciting, is it? Still, I’m not really that cynical; I love a good remaster, and any chance to replay some of my favourite games on a new system is a stress on my wallet.
With the PlayStation 5 on the horizon (reportedly coming in holiday 2020, if we’re to believe industry whispers), we’re bound to get a deluge of remastered titles left over from the PS4 days, much like was the case with the current generation. Hell, I opened my shiny new PS4 with a copy of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag — enough said!
With that in mind, we decided to scribble down some of the PS5 remasters that we’d like to see (or rather, pretty much know are coming) arrive on Sony’s next-gen system.
Best PS5 Remasters
Bloodborne
Bloodborne is four-years-old now, and it’s positively screaming for a PS5 overhaul. Having a full-blown 60fps version of From Software‘s superb hard-as-nails dungeon crawler is a no-brainer, and probably wouldn’t require much effort on the developer’s part either. It’s a stunner already, but a next-gen makeover would surely give it the proper attention it deserves.

Borderlands 3
Gearbox‘s loot-shooter is an ideal candidate for a spruced-up release for Sony’s next home console, and the good news is, the studio has already started thinking about it. The game has just hit the PS4, but the prospect of blasting through the lush worlds of Borderlands 3 and hoovering up precious loot in 4K at a blistering 60fp has us giddy as a school girl.
Control
Remedy‘s latest outing has been a massive hit, and you can’t deny it’s a stunning-looking title. However, with the PC version of Control implementing ray-tracing and looking even more eyeball-poppingly beautiful, not to mention a major selling point, it would make sense for PS5 to get a slice of the action. That’s in addition to a much-needed boost to the frame rate, which is among the game’s most egregious hiccups.
Destiny 2
Bungie this week outlined a five-year plan for Destiny 2, which indicates it won’t be releasing a full-fledged sequel anytime soon. As such, PS5 is absolutely going to be part of those plans, so we can totally see the former Halo studio revamping Destiny 2 for next-gen, giving it a significant visual and performance overhaul. Make no mistake: Bungie will want to make Destiny 2 a massive part of PS5’s online space.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (Part 1)
Developer Square Enix is probably going to take about 18-24 months developing subsequent chapters in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, so that means they’re almost certainly next-gen only. That leaves the first part, which is coming to PS4 in 2020, the same year PS5 is out. It seems logical, then, that Sony would want a full release of Final Fantasy VII Remake out on its next-gen system, no doubt with a few extra bits and bobs thrown in for good measure.
God of War
Sony Santa Monica’s PS4 dad god simulator was a massive success both critically and commercially…but there’s room for improvement. With the PS5 packing some serious technical muscle under the hood, the development team could iron out a few wrinkles on Kratos’ war-scarred mug, improving the load times, frame rate, and adding some extra visual flare to what is already a remarkably polished title. God of War Remastered for PS5 launch? Yes please!
Grand Theft Auto V
Okay, so GTA V is nearly six-years-old now, and the PS4 version is almost turning five. But so what? Rockstar Games‘ crime caper one of the biggest video games on the market, and GTA Online still makes publisher Take-Two a ton of cash. As such, GTA V coming to PS5 is almost certainly going to happen; they’re not going to miss out on all that money-making potential when the switch to next-gen happens. Plus, the PS4 version is showing its age a bit now, so a re-release could definitely iron out a few wrinkles.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 2’s PS4 remake was an absolute belter, but there’s definitely a case to be argued about it coming to Sony’s next telly box. Not only could Capcom revamp it as an Ultimate Edition with all costumes and DLC, but the RE Engine is fully primed for PS5 and Xbox Scarlett, meaning it could receive some notably performance buffs. Just imagine creeping through the halls of the R.P.D. on PS5? It’ll be lush.
Shadow of the Colossus
Bluepoint Games‘ full-blown remake of Shadow of the Colossus was an absolute triumph. Technically it delivers a barn-storming performance, but a PS5 overhaul would definitely give it some added clout, particularly when it comes to resolution and frame rate. Having one of the best ever PlayStation remakes with a full PS5 paint job would definitely have us chucking our money at the screen.
The Last Of Us: Part 2
You know this is happening. The Last of Us was ported to the PS4 less than a year after it arrived on the PS3, and we can totally see Naughty Dog making The Last of Us: Part 2 a cross-gen release — with an enhanced PS5 release being the definitive version, obviously. The PS4 version is one of the final major exclusives of its kind, and it would be great to see the game as one of the first big PS5 games on the market.
