Konami Hasn’t Given Up On Making Console Games

Japanese video game giant Konami has said the company hasn’t given up on making traditional console games, despite the fact it isn’t ready to announce any fresh entries in the Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill franchises. In recent years, the developer has been working on mobile titles, with its only major console project being Pro Evolution Soccer.

Konami Working On ‘Globally Known IPs’

Speaking with GI.biz, Masami Saso, Konami’s European president, said that the company still has unannounced projects in the pipeline; and what’s more, they’re based on ‘globally known IPs.’

Even with new platforms coming out, we believe high-end console games are the most important. We challenge for innovative ideas and technology within our console games and apply them to other devices, so we will continue to put effort into our console games.

We also plan to increase our portfolio. In addition to the multi-device titles for PES and Yu-Gi-Oh, we plan to work on projects with other globally known IPs in the near future.

Konami celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, and in recent months has been churning out remastered collections of some of its biggest franchises, including Contra and Castlevania.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Silent Hill, sadly. The last major game in the series was 2012’s Silent Hill: Downpour, and Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills project with Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus was cancelled.

As for Metal Gear Solid, Kojima-san worked on the last instalment, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, back in 2015. However, he left Konami later that year to establish his own independent studio, and the series returned last year with the spin-off Metal Gear Survive, which was a bit on the naff side.

Silent Hill turned 20-years-old this year, so I was hoping we might get some sort of project to celebrate the milestone, but it’s not looking likely. Still, we can live in hope that the psychological horror franchise (and Metal Gear Solid, for that matter) will return again at some point.
