If you haven’t been keeping up with Megaquarium, it’s basically a theme park management romp, only, well, you’re overseeing our own aquarium. As such, you’ll be designing the layout, ponder of which fish to display to your punters, hiring staff, and offering up souvenirs and a place to rest.
Sounds like a lot of pressure, right? Well, it is, but the good thing is that Megaquarium doesn’t put a time limit on your endeavours, allowing you to play at your own pace. Players have the option of taking on a more challenging role in the campaign or going for the relax sandbox mode.
Tim Wicksteed, the creator behind the game, was inspired by visits to Plymouth aquarium and therefore want to try and recreate these experiences in Megaquarium.
“We were inspired by their large marine animal tanks which are fully of rays, sharks, and even a green turtle,” he said.
Megaquarium features nearly 100 species of fish, among which includes crustaceans, octopuses, seahorses, and jellyfish. Each one also includes stats and care requirements that players have to attend to, and there’s even a Whale Shark in there, too.
All the distinctive features of Whale Sharks had to make it in. That includes their blunt snout, white spots and belly, and their wide mouths which they use to filter-feed on krill. With all that done, it was time to animate the Whale Sharks so they swim like their real-life cousins. These gentle giants get around by moving their tails from side to side – not up and down like dolphins.
Megaquarium will be released for the PS4 on October 18.
