The difference between a good emulation machine and a great one comes with what systems that machine is capable of emulating. Many retro consoles provide very simple emulations methods, and you can find emulation machines for those almost anywhere. However, some retro consoles were so convoluted that they still lack strong emulation even today. However, the Polymega looks to swing for the bleachers with its new emulation device, aptly named Polymega, coming later this year.
Polymega, an expandable console emulator
Many emulation devices in today’s market either consist of dedicated machines to certain consoles or just software for phones or computers. The Polymega hopes to become the only retro device you have in your living room. As an example of PS1 emulation, Polymega released a little footage of Brave Fencer Musashi running on the device.
This isn’t the real test of the hardware. For a while now, the PS1 has nearly been perfected in terms of emulation. This comes generally from its more streamlined infrastructure. However, some retro consoles included rather cumbersome infrastructures. One of the most guilty of this was the Sega Saturn, also known as the Mega Drive. The next video may not look like an impressive game to emulate, but there’s more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye.
The Sega Saturn featured multiple internal systems that needed to run well together, often synchronized. Other times, those systems ran on their own in odds ways. Some even were reported to have “just worked,” so fully understanding a game’s programming within that infrastructure becomes the biggest challenge to overcome when it comes to emulation.
