The Last Of Us: Part 2 Has Dogs, But Killing Them Is Entirely Optional

Naughty Dog has revealed that one of the major new additions to The Last of Us: Part 2 is the inclusion of dogs used by human enemies to sniff out and track you down. However, while you’re not defenceless against these canine enemies, killing them entirely your choice.

The Last Of Us: Part 2’s Dogs Are Optional Kills

Neil Druckmann, the game’s director, clarified on Twitter that eliminating these pesky pooches are optional in response to a GameSpot article that read ‘you’ll kill a lot of dogs in The Last of Us Part 2.’

“If you choose to. Just clarifying…,” wrote Druckmann.

As mentioned, dogs are one of the many new additions for the post-apocalyptic sequel. Not only are they able to track Ellie’s scent, which means they are excellent at tracking you down even when you’re hiding, they are immune to stealth kills, too.

Get caught by one of these sharp-toothed foes, and you’ll be in for a mauling. Oh, and if you do kill them, their owner will express their sadness at the act. Evidently, Naughty Dog is trying to make you feel as guilty as possible for killing enemies this time around (humans are all named, too).

The Last of Us: Part 2 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020. The game will not feature a multiplayer component, but Naughty Dog later assured fans that they will be able to play it at some point down the line, hinting at a possible standalone release.

Unlike the first game, The Last of Us: Part 2 will ship on two Blu-ray discs and will be available in five different versions, one of which (the Ellie Edition) is exclusive to North America.

Be sure to check out the latest video of the game in action, where Druckmann details the various new features for the game.
