Resident Evil 6 Screenshot

Capcom has announced that free Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 demos are now available on Nintendo Switch.

While “certain game features are limited in the demo,” you will be able to carry over the save data to the full game.

However, there is a limit to how much you can carry over weapons, items, and money. In Resident Evil 5, for example, that limit is three weapons per type, 100 ammo per type, five items, and up to 10,000 money.

Resident Evil 5

While the Umbrella Corporation and its crop of lethal viruses have been destroyed and contained, a more dangerous threat has emerged. Somewhere in Africa, innocent villagers are transforming into aggressive and disturbing creatures.

Featuring online and couch co-op, players can experience this Resident Evil classic as either Chris Redfield or his partner, Sheva Alomar, as the duo work together to investigate and stop those responsible for the viral outbreak. The game is scheduled to launch this fall.

Resident Evil 6

Blending action and survival horror, Resident Evil 6 delivers an epic and dramatic horror experience. Resident Evil favorites Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield are joined by series newcomers to face a global level threat: the highly virulent C-virus.

Valfaris Review

Valfaris Review Header

The team that created Slain: Back From Hell blasts out their new game from the fiery depths of Lucifer’s furnace straight into the far reaches of space. While the resurrected phoenix of Steel Mantis’ last game didn’t quite rise to meet its potential, Valfaris comes flying out guns blazing with an air guitar at the ready.

We play as Therion – son of Vroll – who must scope out an alien planet where his father had once ruled. Taking a side step from the melee-heavy antics from the studio’s last venture, Valfaris mixes close-quarters combat with a trenchcoat full of firepower. The result is Contra crossed with Doom, sewn together with heavy metal album covers boiled into a xenomorph stew and a sprawling biological landscape where the only friend you have is an apparitional AI assistant to help aid your way in the search for answers.

Therion has three attacks at his disposal: a standard weapon type that holds an infinite amount of ammo; a weighty short-ranged attack that will refill your power meter with every strike; and a more powerful secondary weapon that burns meter with a much stronger output. He can also use this same meter to fuel a defensive shield – which can counter a projectile back to its sender if timed right – or even stun an enemy with a successful melee parry. When all are dancing together, meter management and refill acquirement soon become a satisfying juggling act that leaves no skill neglected.

Valfaris Review Screenshot 1

It’s a combination that really works well for Valfaris’ high-octane approach. Weaker enemies can be disposed of quickly with the standard weapon or can be farmed to keep the bigger gun topped up ready for when stronger foes are thrown into the mix. There’s a decent balance of having to think about what’s in front of you without becoming too taxing in execution. While there are plenty of areas to investigate to reap rewards, there’s very little in regards to puzzle-solving which fits nicely in this case not to break the tempo.

The gap between checkpoints is very generous with a catch. To activate a checkpoint the player must insert an Idol of Resurrection which are often found hidden or strategically placed throughout the game. The thing is, an Idol of Resurrection will also increase Therion’s life meter if the player decides not to spend it. There’s also the option to trade them for a Blood Metal alloy which can be used to boost weapon abilities. Despite usually anchoring the Idol of Resurrection into checkpoint landmarks, it did give me more reasons to explore the landscapes and even gamble skipping some checkpoints altogether. With so many different types of weapons to be found and upgrade, obtaining Blood Metals soon became something that was tempting enough to exchange for rather than just stumble across.

With all these mechanics working together, Valfaris becomes a much more intriguing voyage than the average Contra-inspired shooter it could have easily have been. Certain weapons can be heavily relied upon due to their practical use and upgrade potential, which did give me little reason to experiment too much. However, when I would start to play around with something new I often found that they had more worth than first meets the eye. Which goes to say, it’s very unlikely that many will upgrade all available weapons during the first playthrough. Unless of course, you’re willing to risk it for a biscuit and completely neglect activating checkpoints.

Valfaris Review Screenshot 2

Valfaris happens to be a good looking game, too. It has an interesting art style that sort of toys with 2D pixel graphics to look somewhat like a vanilla PlayStation or SEGA Saturn game. Usually, a game of that generation really doesn’t have the same eye-candy appeal that their 16-bit predecessors still have today. Yet somehow, there’s a really unique visual charm to Valfaris that just works. The heavy-metal soundtrack to accompany the visuals fits just as well here as it did in Slain: Back From Hell, in not being too on the nose for those not quite as keen on that particular taste in music. In fact, it’s a pretty great soundtrack, especially during the boss battles – something Valfaris is never short on.

Although I did find some enjoyment from my time with Slain: Back From Hell, it was pretty clear that its problems far outweighed the game’s potential. It’s fantastic to see, then, that Steel Mantis has gone back to the drawing board and really taken the time to figure out how to play their next move. Venturing through organic alien landscapes and through the dreaded depths of an extra-terrestrial catacomb keeps the eye-candy interesting and consistent. The level design keeps the gameplay variable beyond its influenced nature with some intelligent pacing and platforming to boot. There’s really never a dull moment in Valfaris, which is pushed further by maintaining a challenge while not feeling too overwhelming at any given moment.

Needless to say, I really liked how Valfaris has turned out. Its old school roots of arcade run-and-gun feel nurtured and cared for in a way that freshens the genre up with some great ideas, a balanced difficulty curve, wonderful level design, tight controls and a wide variety of enemies to plow through. It never tries to be anything more than it needs to be, including the time it takes to beat it. It’s the developer’s second chance at a first impression that deserves to make as much noise as the pluck shredding the strings of the electric guitar that used to compose the game’s soundtrack. With a promised Full Metal Mode in the works to ramp up the challenge, I can really see myself venturing back into the intergalactic undergrowth of the dangerous planet known as Valfaris.

Apple TV Plus PS4 – Will You Be Able To Get Apple TV+ On PlayStation 4?

Apple TV Plus PS4

Apple TV Plus is the latest in a long line of streaming services – though this one, like Disney Plus before it, is very much focused on delivering exclusive content that you cannot get anywhere else. As a result, people have been asking – will Apple TV Plus PS4 release happen? And if so, when can we expect Apple TV Plus to release on PlayStation 4?

Apple TV Plus PS4 Release

As of right now, Apple TV Plus (Apple TV Plus) exists as a service within the Apple TV app which is exclusive to Apple devices. Presently, there is no Apple TV Plus app for either PS4 or Xbox One.

However, Apple did say that Apple TV Plus would be available on “other platforms in the future” and also “that this autumn, we’re bringing the Apple TV experience to popular smart TVs, streaming boxes and streaming sticks.”

Related Content – PS5 Latest News – Release Date, Controller, 4K Blu-ray & More

While that’s far from any sort of confirmation that the Apple TV Plus app will release on PS4 and Xbox One, it would make a lot of sense for Apple to do so – especially when you consider that the combined user base of those two consoles approaches something close to 150 million users; a fact that surely Apple is aware of.

What Is Apple TV Plus?

As mentioned previously, Apple TV Plus is a streaming service from Cupertino tech giant Apple that aims to deliver a raft of original TV shows and movies that you cannot get elsewhere. It delivers this content through the Apple TV Plus app, which as of right now, is only available on Apple produced devices.

One of the biggest announcements for Apple TV Plus service has been that Masters of the Air will release on the platform. For the unaware, Masters of the Air is the third and final instalment in the World War II television trilogy released by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks which started with Band of Brothers in 2001 and then The Pacific in 2010 at HBO.

In short, there’s going to be a large selection of new TV shows and movies on the platform with a big old bank account behind them. You can catch a list of the currently announced movies and TV shows for Apple TV Plus below:

  • Amazing Stories
  • Are You Sleeping?
  • Calls
  • Central Park
  • Defending Jacob
  • Dickinson
  • For All Mankind
  • Foundation
  • Home
  • Little America
  • Little Voice
  • Magic Hour
  • Masters of the Air
  • My Glory Was I Had Such Friends
  • Pachinko
  • See
  • Swagger
  • The Morning Show

How Much Does Apple TV Plus Cost?

As of right now, Apple TV Plus costs $5/£4.99 a month after a 7-day trial and permits access for up to six people off of a single subscription. Folks who buy an Apple device from October 2019 forward, such as a new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, will receive a one year subscription to Apple TV Plus at no extra charge.

Obviously, if the situation changes we’ll be sure to update this article – so stay tuned!

Review: Call Of Cthulhu - Oppressive Cosmic Horror That's Plagued By Problems

Call of Cthulhu Review - Screenshot 1 of 4

Focus Home Interactive’s reputation for creating daring tie-ins to lapsed license continues. This time we’re taking a peek into the unknowable with Call of Cthulhu, which is based more off of the pen-and-paper RPG of the same name than the original work written by notable author H.P. Lovecraft, who once referred to people of colour as a "beast filled with vice". Call of Cthulhu is another attempt to wash away Lovecraft’s inherent racism and establish a legacy of cosmic horror but without the early 1900s prejudice.

With that said, adapting a work by H.P. Lovecraft – whose horror is so often incited by fear of the “other” – you can’t help but be reminded of where this game came from, its origins, and its attempts to divorce itself from a toxic legacy. There’s not even really a debate to be had around the uncomfortable nature of Lovecraft’s writing when viewed through the lens of modern society, and the developers of Call of Cthulhu have to reckon with that fact.

Call of Cthulhu Review - Screenshot 2 of 4

Call of Cthulhu takes place just after World War One, where you take up the role of Edward Pierce, a war veteran who wrestles with nightmares, drinks like someone is going to take it away from him and self-medicates a little too much, too. At the beginning of the game, Pierce is tasked with finding out exactly what happened in a mysterious fire on the fictitious island of Darkwater. From this initial setup, Call of Cthulhu shows its hand as a game where you have to explore and investigate your surroundings, peering deeper into the mysteries of Darkwater, and talking to its many inhabitants.

The atmosphere that this breeds is darkly oppressive, with the game’s dank and dreary palette further serving this gothic tale of cosmic horror. It manages to build tension easily, and a few hours into the game, you’re quickly wanting to know more about Darkwater and the monsters just creeping beneath the surface. For those who are familiar with the works of Lovecraft, this setup quickly unravels. This is no fault of the game itself, but instead, one that arises with the sheer saturation of Lovecraftian horror games that we’ve played in recent years. Soon the story beats become rote, and you start to know exactly what the unknowable is.

Call of Cthulhu Review - Screenshot 3 of 4

Exploring as Pierce is great, and you’re able to assign points to traditional tabletop RPG stats such as Psychology, Eloquence, Strength and more. As you dive deeper into Call of Cthulhu, you’re able to level these up and unlock more options within the game. However, the usage of these is based around percentages which then, in turn, use a behind-the-scenes dice roll, which can feel frustrating at times.

The first-person exploration feels solid enough, and throughout Call of Cthulhu, you’re presented with a wealth of choices and options. The game is operating as its prime when you’re walking around as Pierce, but we can’t help but feel that certain missions give you more limited choices in certain scenarios, and the numerous forced stealth sections are a detriment – as they tend to be to any game they’re placed in. When paired with some frustrating puzzle-design, the unknowable madness of Darkwater may as well have been the act of playing through Call of Cthulhu all along.

It’s a mild complaint about an otherwise competent game where your detective and P.I. skills are put to the test in an interesting environment and setting. As we said previously, the environment is thick with atmosphere, and fans of the genre will find everything they’re looking for while playing Call of Cthulhu. However, there are some technical issues that the game suffers with, too.

Call of Cthulhu Review - Screenshot 4 of 4

Just as Pierce stares into the abyss, we stared at our own personal abyss, which was our face’s reflection on the Nintendo Switch screen while stuck on one of Call of Cthulhu’s many lengthy loading screens. Paired with flat, basic visuals where textures can appear to be muddy, it’s pretty safe to say that Call of Cthulhu is very much in the same ballpark as games such as Elex and the Sherlock Holmes series when it comes to polish and presentation – which is to say, the game might attempt to deliver a certain look and feel with ambition, but falters somewhat on a technical level.

There are some pretty significant framerate issues within Call of Cthulhu when inspecting objects and exploring large areas. It’s glaringly obvious where the game falters, and while undocked the experience is playable, it’s hard to really enjoy things through the flat textures and low overall performance. That said, it does look reasonably impressive when you remember the hardware that it’s running on.

Conclusion

Call of Cthulhu manages to deliver a game that’s ripe with atmosphere but is built upon tried-and-true tropes of the genre that never really manage to evolve beyond the scope of what’s already been seen and heard before. Paired with some technical hiccups, we can say that Call of Cthulhu is only really for truly dedicated fans of Lovecraft; everyone else is advised to look elsewhere for their entertainment.

  • Freedom of exploration within the world
  • Thick with atmosphere
  • Exceptionally long loading times
  • Doesn't do anything that we've not seen before
  • Frequent performance issues

Average 5/10

Payday 3 Release Set For 2022-2023 According To Starbreeze

Payday 3 PS5 Release

Somehow still managing to cling onto life, beleaguered Swedish developer/publisher Starbreeze has said that it will release Payday 3 between 2022 and 2023. Assuming it happens, this almost certainly makes a Payday 3 PS5 release a likelihood.

On the ropes since Overkill’s The Walking Dead absolutely failed both critically and commercially, causing massive financial issues for the company and the removal of head-honcho Bo Andersson. Another consequence of this was that the previously planned release of Overkill’s The Walking Dead on PS4 was cancelled, an understandable approach given the level of uncertainty involved.

Happily though, the company is projecting a massively improved cashflow from 2022 based on “expected events” and thus, you can see where the release of Payday 3 might fall in an around that window of time.

Likewise, the fortunes for the Swedish outfit haven’t been entirely bad either. Indeed, Starbreeze Publishing has done well off of the back of its publishing of the extremely popular Dead by Daylight, which has sold extremely well on all formats and platforms (A Nintendo Switch version of popular asynchronous horror title has even been released recently).

For the uninitiated, the Payday games are taut, team-based shooters where the idea is to use tactics, skills and stealth to rob different structures and locations with a view to improving your crew with the loot before moving onto the next.

Here’s hoping that Payday 3 evolves the concept suitably when (if) it rolls around a few years time.

Review: The Bradwell Conspiracy - More Style Than Substance

The Bradwell Conspiracy Review - Screenshot 1 of 4

It should be a day for celebration. Bradwell Electronics, a seemingly benign British conglomerate, has piqued the world’s attention with the announcement of its groundbreaking ‘Clean Water Initiative’. Gathering the greatest minds from the scientific community within the confines of its Stonehenge Museum, you’re ready to witness the birth of a technological breakthrough. But disaster has seen fit to intervene and you awake amid the rubble of the once-impressive Brutalist facility, masonry collapsing all around and alarms blaring warnings of danger. Was this a freak accident? A terrorist attack? It's up to you to find out.

While its trailers hint at an experience that might flirt with horror, The Bradwell Conspiracy is far more comfortable presenting uncomfortable truths than it is delivering predictable jump scares. New studio A Brave Plan (which comprises talent with experience in everything from the Fable and Tomb Raider series to the Batman games and Ether One) has crafted a slow-burn first-person puzzler that falls somewhere between the narrative beats of Firewatch and the brain-teasing conundrums of Portal, Chromagun and the like.

The Bradwell Conspiracy Review - Screenshot 2 of 4

With only a pair of smart glasses to assist in the opening moments – think Google Glass meets Jarvis from the MCU (voiced by the very talented Abubakar Salim, aka Bayek from Assassin’s Creed Origins) – you’re informed you need to find a way out of this crumbling museum, and pronto. Your AI-powered specs soon discover another survivor – Dr Amber Randall – but you’re both separated by a security door that’s been firmly locked down. With your own voice conveniently silenced by smoke inhalation, you have to rely on the in-built camera of your glasses to send Amber visual prompts, and vice versa.

It’s a cute idea, and one that certainly has a lot of potential. It helps Amber share important information with you, such as a door you need to find in order to progress, or the code for a keypad. There’s even a really neat puzzle early on where you’ll send Amber images of rotating walkways so she can move the correct ones to help you across. Your disembodied companion will also provide her thoughts on pretty much anything you share with her. Found an interesting book on water purification? Discovered an overtly Orwellian company poster? Amber will give you her two cents.

A Brave Plan brought on two dialogue consultants with plenty of experience in TV (including Buffy, Battlestar Galactica and Husbands) and it really shows. Considering your relationship with Amber is an almost entirely one-sided affair, Rebecca LeChance’s performance is warm, natural and convincing. Unfortunately, the photo capture aspect doesn’t always work as smoothly as it should. Responses often lack context, such as Amber telling you to follow a sign you just shared with her, only to discover you’ve been sent in the wrong direction because you’ve missed an important blueprint or story beat.

The Bradwell Conspiracy Review - Screenshot 3 of 4

There are no on-screen markers or prompts either, so you’ll often need to rely on the visual and audio clues Amber provides – as well as maps and signs littered throughout the Bradwell site – in order to navigate your way through its eerie and empty hallways. You can collect new Guide specs along the way, which serve as rudimentary keycards for accessing new areas. These also give you access to email accounts and voice mails that give a little more insight into the nature of Bradwell’s research, as well as some odd little throwaway moments, such as an impromptu meditation session. It’s a very spartan approach to storytelling and navigation, but it fits the minimalist style of the Bradwell world and it ultimately urges you to push further into the mystery.

After a brief wander around the main foyer of the facility – with Stonehenge itself visible through a giant panoramic window – you’re given a quick tutorial on one of Bradwell Electronics’ other breakthroughs, the Substance Mobile Printer, or SMP for short. It’s a portable 3D printer that enables you to suck up a malleable material and print designs based on blueprints you discover throughout the Stonehenge Museum and the facility beneath. With a chirpy overview from – of all people – British chat show host Jonathan Ross, you now have a means of interacting with the environment to solve various puzzles that are blocking your way.

The Bradwell Conspiracy Review - Screenshot 4 of 4

Annoyingly, you can’t scan every item in the game and replicate it, only those made from Substance. Almost every new item you suck up provides a unit of Substance and a blueprint that enables you to rebuild it. Initially, you’ll use this tool to create planks to cross broken walkways, but later on you’re scanning algae pods to restart reactors and complete puzzles involving pipes. These limitations are there to stop you breaking the game, but with a relative amount of freedom to explore in each area of the facility (your blueprints and Substance are reset every time you progress to a new section in the story), you’re left to study the environment and use Amber’s hints and usable blueprints to solve each new puzzle/work out where to go next. There’s a decent variety to the puzzles, and most are relatively easy to deduct, but each one does ultimately rely on the same formula of ‘search for right blueprint/collect enough Substance’/make everything fit’ and it does eventually lose its sense of wonder.

Sadly, The Bradwell Conspiracy also suffers from some significant technical issues on Nintendo Switch. The game is meant to be running at around 30fps, but it can struggle to maintain that figure with consistent drops in frames and lag. We eventually grew used to the slowdown, but watching the camera chug or particle effects shift and flit in an effort to keep up is frustrating and very distracting. It should be added that other versions of the game are also suffering from similar problems, so it’s not just an issue isolated to Nintendo Switch. We were also frustrated to see a lack of touchscreen controls, which seems an odd omission considering the game has also been released on Apple Arcade.

Conclusion

The Bradwell Conspiracy offers an intriguing take on the first-person puzzler formula, even if its USP lacks the simple creativity of other similar puzzle games. The story itself has some real potential, but it ultimately fails to really flesh out some of the more interesting beats hinted at in news reports and audio logs. More interactive than Firewatch but far less challenging than The Witness, this is a puzzler that’s ultimately more style than substance. And with so many issues with performance in its launch state, The Bradwell Conspiracy on Switch doesn’t prove itself to be the ultimate portable version it really should be.

  • Solid voice-over performances
  • Some creative puzzles to solve via 3D printing
  • Performance issues impact immersion
  • No support for touchscreen controls
  • 3D printing is more limited than it seems

Fallout New Vegas PS4 – How Can You Play It?

Fallout New Vegas PS4

Is Fallout New Vegas PS4 a thing? Easily one of the most adored entries in the whole Fallout franchise, PS4 players have been wondering whether or not Fallout New Vegas will ever be playable on PS4. Well, there’s both good news and bad news to be had here.

Fallout New Vegas PS4 – What’s The Deal?

Starting with the bad news, there is no Fallout New Vegas PS4 release planned as of right now. With Bethesda’s attention now elsewhere with existing titles like Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls Online and on-going development for Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 for next-generation consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett, it seems like there isn’t much time for them to sort out a PS4 release of Fallout New Vegas (especially as original developer Obsidian Entertainment, is also off doing other things too such as The Outer Worlds and other games).

That said, if you want to play Fallout New Vegas on your PS4, you’re not totally out of options.

Originally developed and released for PS3, Fallout New Vegas can actually be played on PS4 via the PlayStation Now game streaming service.

Though this is far from ideal, since the version you’ll be streaming is the bog standard PS3 version from years ago, it’s still the only way as of right now to play Fallout New Vegas on your PS4. Obviously if this situation changes, we’ll be sure to let you know!

Interestingly however, rumors about Fallout New Vegas 2 reignited a couple of years ago when developer Obsidian Entertainment said that they would be excited to take on the project – however, since then many things have changed; not least the fact that in addition to concentrating on their own IP such as The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity, they also happened to be owned by Microsoft now too.

The six parameters are Enthusiasm, Mentality, Cheerfulness, Kindness, Intelligence, and Stylishness. They are described as the following:

Enthusiasm – The source of “willingness” and “romance.” Develops through enthusiastic conduct and doing things with utmost effort.

Mentality – The source of “mental strength” and “concentration.” Develops through situations that test your courage and emotional strength.

Cheerfulness – The source of “sociability” and “brightness.” Develops through actions that lighten the mood.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon was announced back in August and will be coming to the West in 2020, after its Japanese release. In Japan, the game is titled Yakuza 7. The game will ditch the trademark realtime combat, instead opting for turn-based combat. However, it has been made clear that the series will return to realtime combat if Yakuza: Like A Dragon doesn’t sell well.

A recent trailer gave us an in-depth look at that new combat. This came alongside a number of new details about the game, including a variety of mini-games and side activities you can partake in.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon releases in 2020 in the West for PS4.
