Sony is busy tinkering away on the PlayStation 5 for a reported holiday 2020 launch, and we know a fair amount about the system already. The next-generation console will boast an array of features, including backwards compatibility with PS4 games and an SSD for reduced loading times, and rumours suggest it’s packing more technical muscle under the hood than Xbox Scarlett.
Still, PS5 will only be as good as its games, and while Sony’s keeping many of its plans close to its chest in that respect, there’s plenty of titles that we know are almost guaranteed to arrive on the console.
Here’s some of the games that we’re looking forward to the most and what to expect from the best PS5 games.
Best PS5 Games
Cyberpunk 2077
Eh? Isn’t CD Projekt RED’s science-fiction opus coming to PS4 and Xbox One? Well, yes. But the studio has indicated on more than one occasion that Cyberpunk 2077 may also grace Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles. To be fair, shouldn’t be all that shocking; we’re going to see a lot of cross-gen titles much like we did during the transition from PS3 to PS4, and Cyberpunk 2077 is an obvious choice.
Death Stranding
Another contender for a cross-gen release is Death Stranding. One of the final major PS4-exclusives would make for a solid candidate for PS5, most probably as one of the launch window titles. It’s a stunning-looking game, and Kojima-san and team are probably optimizing it for Sony’s shiny new telly box as we pen this very article.
Dragon Age 4
BioWare’s fantasy-RPG series has been keeping a low profile since 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, although we know that the studio is beavering away on Dragon Age 4. It’s still a long way off, so this is a guaranteed PS5 game — and probably won’t turn up for another three years. We still don’t know much about it, but in wake of the Anthem cock-up, a lot of people are looking for a return to form for BioWare with Dragon Age 4.
God of War 2
While we’ve yet to see this announced, you know that Sony Santa Monica is chiseling away this future PS5 juggernaut. After the five million plus-selling God of War on PS4, the franchise is at its strongest in years (possibly ever), and Sony knows that folk are clamoring for more mythical eviscerating action courtesy of everyone’s favorite perpetually pissed-off dad, Kratos. Expect more monsters, buckets of gore, bigger environments, and the same superb storytelling that made 2018’s outing such a bonafide classic.
New Gran Turismo
Polyphony Digital’s flagship racing series flirted with something a little different with Gran Turismo Sport, but we’re definitely getting a new game for PS5. In fact, creator Kazunori Yamauchi has already revealed it’s in the pipeline. Given the extra storage capabilities of PS5, we can expect a garage load of cars to grace the track for the new Gran Turismo, not to mention near-photo realistic visuals. This one is going to kick the driving simulator genre up its arse, make no mistake.
Ghost Of Tsushima
Sucker Punch Productions‘ epic Samurai slasher hasn’t been seen properly since its E3 2018 reveal, and rumours have cropped up recently that the game is now being re-positioned as a PS5 title. This would make a lot of sense; Ghost of Tsushima is obviously still heavy in development, and is technically ambitious, making it ideal candidate for Sony’s next-gen workhorse.
New Ratchet & Clank
With Sony having scooped up developer Insomniac Games, a new entry in the dynamic duo Ratchet & Clank is bound to happen at some point. The franchise has been on ice since 2016’s eponymous re-imagining of the first game, which came out around the same time as the abysmal CGI film. However, we’re pretty sure that plans for a new Ratchet & Clank are already bubbling away at Insomniac HQ, with the duo set to appear on PS5 at some point down the line.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Remake
Capcom struck gold with its fully revamped PS4 version of Resident Evil 2 in early 2019. Given that both the timelines of Resi 2 and 3 are inextricably linked (Nemesis takes place 24 hours before and after its predecessor), it makes sense that the company would want to overhaul 1999’s Nemesis, not to mention capitalize on the financial success of REmake 2. If you thought Mr. X was terrifying, believe me when I say you have no idea what a PS5-powered Nemesis will do to your sleep patterns. This will be pant-shittingly good stuff.
Resident Evil 8
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard acted as a soft reboot of sorts for the venerable zombie-mashing franchise, offering a new first-person viewpoint and fresh chills. While we don’t yet know what direction Resi 8 will take, you can be sure that Capcom will make it look blood-curdlingly beautiful with its RE Engine, which the studio has said is ripe for next-gen consoles. Personally, I’m hoping we’ll get more legacy characters this time around, and the first-person view should definitely stay.
Spider-Man 2
Insomniac’s Spider-Man on PS4 is the best-selling superhero game of all time in the US, so a sequel is pretty much a no-brainer at this point. Spidey’s web-slinging adventure absolutely nailed traversal and combat for Marvel’s iconic superhero, and no doubt Insomniac is already planning out what Spider-Man 2 will have in store. Expect a bigger open-world, more combat options, iconic villains, pitch-perfect storytelling.
The Elder Scrolls VI
Bethesda is taking its time with The Elder Scrolls VI, the next chapter in its critically acclaimed fantasy-RPG series. Apart from a logo and a pretty landscape shot, we know bugger all about the game, other than it’s coming out after Starfield. This will definitely not be showing up for a good couple of years into the PS5’s life-cycle, although we’re positively salivating at the thought of how utterly scrumptious it will look on Sony’s next-gen console.
The Last Of Us: Part 2
We can totally see this happening. Much like The Last of Us was swiftly ported to the PS4 within a year of its release, Sony will most probably want to get The Last of Us: Part 2 out on PS5 as soon as possible; we might even get this as a launch title if we’re lucky. Naughty Dog’s Clicker-clobbering sequel is looking stunning so far, with improved combat mechanics, gorgeous visuals, and a compelling lead in 19-year-old Ellie making it a no-brainer for PS5.
